My Approach

THIS IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM CONSULTATIONS

  • To be listened to with attention.

  • To reflect what you tell me so, you know I understood it.

  • To offer you some ideas on the possible underlying cause/s of your complaint/condition.

  • Suggestions on how to overcome the said complaint/condition.

  • To work with you on a "plan of action" specific for your situation.

  • The space, time and atmosphere in consultations should allow you to work things out at your own pace.

This process can shortly be described as Talking - Reflecting - Planning - Acting. Depending on your specific situation some parts of the process may take up more time than others. For example, a person may want to "just talk about what's going on", or they may want to get into working on a "plan of action" as soon as possible.

I STRIVE TO PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE SERVICE

  • ROOT CAUSE - Rather than only managing the unwanted symptoms, I will discuss with you and clearly articulate the possible root cause of your complaint (or problem or condition). If you attend to the cause, any unwanted symptoms will subside of themselves. Also, you may learn your symptoms to be a valuable information that can help you guide your life rather than see symptoms as something to be get rid of.

  • INDIVIDUAL APPROACH - I see each individual and their situation as unique and specific. You will be assisted and encouraged to develop your own understanding of, and seek solutions to, the complaint that you are seeing me for.

  • LASTING SOLUTIONS - The insights and skills you learn through the consultations have a self-perpetuating quality, meaning that once you start putting the plan of action in place it will start generating its own momentum, making progress easier over time. With enough consultations and practice behind you, you can expect your life experience to keep improving even after you stop attending consultations. See below for scientific evidence for this statement. *

  • MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH - When appropriate or upon your request I can investigate with you how other health professionals may assist you with your complaint, or with another health issue that may be related to the complaint you approached me for. Physical, emotional, and mental experiences are inter-linked and inter-dependent so for best results a multi-prong approach is advised.

My approach falls under the professional umbrella of "Psychodynamic Psychotherapy". According to multiple scientific reviews and analysis of this approach, as reported in a professional journal American Psychologist*: "Especially noteworthy is the recurring finding that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy not only endure but increase with time. In contrast, the benefits of other (non-psychodynamic) empirically supported therapies tend to decay over time for the most common disorders (e.g., depression, generalized anxiety). For many people, psychodynamic therapy may foster inner resources and capacities that allow richer, freer, and more fulfilling lives."
